Why upload speed matters more than you think
Every video call you’re in is a live upload. So is cloud backup, sending large attachments, pushing code, posting videos and game streaming. When upload runs out, calls pixelate and freeze — usually blamed on “the internet”, actually the thin upstream lane.
A single HD call wants 3–4 Mbps of steady upload; add screen sharing and a second caller in the house and a 10 Mbps upstream is already tight. If your work happens in meetings, upload is the number to watch when choosing a plan.
What’s a good upload speed?
5 Mbps covers one solid HD call. 10–20 Mbps keeps a small household comfortable — simultaneous calls, cloud sync trickling in the background. Creators moving big video files and anyone on camera daily should look for 50+ Mbps, and symmetric fiber (upload = download) removes the ceiling entirely.
Like latency, upload quality has a second dimension: how it behaves under load. This test measures your latency during upload too — if it balloons, your calls will stutter exactly when a backup runs.
Why upload is so much slower than download
Cable (DOCSIS) and DSL networks were engineered around consumption: the frequency plan gives downloads many times the capacity of uploads, which is why 300/10 plans exist. It’s a design choice, not a fault on your line.
Fiber has no such physical asymmetry — many fiber ISPs sell symmetric plans, and it’s one of the strongest practical reasons to switch when video calls and backups fill your day.
How this test measures upload honestly
Browsers report upload progress as soon as data enters the local send buffer — long before it crosses your line. Tests that read that counter can overstate upload dramatically on some connections.
This test counts only bytes the measurement server confirms it received, timed over the request’s round trip. The number is occasionally less flattering than elsewhere — it’s also the one your actual calls and backups get.
