Latency, jitter and your ping under load — measured in about ten seconds, using a fraction of the data of a full speed test.

What this ping test measures

Ping (latency) is the time one packet needs to travel to a server and back, in milliseconds. This test sends around thirty small probes to the nearest Cloudflare datacenter — usually just a few milliseconds away in 300+ cities — so the number reflects your connection, not the distance to some far-away server.

We report the median ping, your jitter (how much consecutive probes vary), and something most ping tests skip: your ping while the line is busy. That last number — loaded latency — is what your connection feels like when someone in the house is downloading, and it’s where many “fast” connections quietly fail.

Browsers can’t send raw ICMP packets (the classic ping command), so we measure HTTP round trips over your real browsing protocol instead. The absolute number runs a few milliseconds higher than ICMP ping, but it’s also closer to what your apps actually experience.

What is a good ping?

Under 20 ms feels instant and is what competitive gamers want. 20–50 ms is good for everything, including fast-paced games. 50–100 ms is fine for browsing, streaming and most games, though you may notice delay in twitchy shooters. Above 150 ms, real-time apps — calls, gaming, remote desktop — start to feel sluggish no matter how much bandwidth you have.

Jitter matters as much as the average: a steady 40 ms beats a ping that bounces between 15 and 120. Keep jitter under about 10–15 ms for calls and gaming to feel stable.

Why your ping rises when the line is busy

When a download saturates your line, packets queue up in the buffers of your modem and router. Oversized buffers — bufferbloat — can add hundreds of milliseconds of delay, which is why calls stutter and games lag “even though the internet is fast”.

This test measures it directly: after the idle phase, we briefly load your line with a download while continuing to probe. The difference between the two numbers is your added latency under load, graded A (under 20 ms added — imperceptible) to F (over 400 ms — the line chokes when busy).

How to lower your ping

Use a cable: Ethernet removes Wi-Fi retransmissions, often cutting several milliseconds of latency and most of the jitter. If you must use Wi-Fi, prefer the 5 GHz band close to the router.

Fight bufferbloat: if your grade under load is C or worse, enable SQM / Smart Queue Management (fq_codel or CAKE) in your router — it’s the single biggest latency improvement most homes can make.

Beyond that: close background uploads and cloud syncs, prefer game servers in your region, and remember that a VPN adds the detour to its server on top of every round trip.

Common questions

What is a good ping for gaming?

Under 20 ms is excellent, under 50 ms is good for fast-paced play, and under 100 ms is fine for most genres. Stability matters just as much — low jitter and a good bufferbloat grade keep your aim consistent even when the line is busy.

Ping vs latency vs jitter — what’s the difference?

Latency is the travel time of a packet; ping is the everyday name for a round-trip latency measurement. Jitter is how much that time varies between packets. High jitter with a low average still makes games and calls feel bad.

Why is my ping high?

The usual suspects, in order: Wi-Fi (weak signal or interference), a busy line (bufferbloat while someone downloads), a VPN detour, evening congestion at your ISP, or simple distance to the server. Test wired and idle to find your baseline, then compare.

Why is this different from the ping command in my terminal?

The ping command uses ICMP packets; browsers aren’t allowed to send those, so we time small HTTP requests instead. Expect a few milliseconds more than ICMP — but measured over the same protocol your real apps use.

Does this test use a lot of data?

No. The idle phase sends tiny probes, and the load phase downloads for only a few seconds — typically a few tens of megabytes, versus hundreds for a full speed test. It’s designed to be run casually, even on mobile data.

Can I lower ping by paying for more bandwidth?

Usually not. Latency comes from distance, Wi-Fi and buffering, not from your plan’s speed tier. A 100 Mbps line with good buffer management (SQM) will out-feel a gigabit line with bufferbloat in any call or game.
